A Practice in Nostalgia: Found Photos

I started a new album on flickr today called "Found Photos." My intent is to keep this album up to date as I find photos of friends, family, locations, or whatever--with the hopes that these photos would remind me of who I am and where I have come from.

Who would I be without the people, places, and stories I have encountered? No one. I guess that means the making of this photo album is not merely a practice in nostalgia. It is also an exercise in sel-discovery and self-definition.

So, please, take time to know each of these images, because each person and thing captured here has served in making me who I am. Welcome to my world: Found Photos

Photos: SFCI Field Trip

This semester, I have been involved in a new club here at Union University called The Society for Critical Imagination. This club, led by Prof. Taylor Worley and Prof. Jonathan Paul Gillette, is dedicated to understanding the contemporary art world and bringing it into dialogue with christian theology.

Anyway, my wife and I were able to go on a journey this weekend with the Society the Sojourn Church in Louisville, KY to see Jose Gonzalez perform. incredible. . .

Here are some photo from this weekend, more of which you can see on my flickr stream:

Happy Holidays. . .

It has been great being home for thanksgiving. It is always good to spend time with family, catch up with old friends, and get a little bit of rest. During the semester it is often hard to remember to be grateful for anything, except for my wife who often is the only reason I can survive the pressure. But being home is always a great reminder of the great blessings I have been given.

The shots below are part of a quasi-journalistic set from decorating the christmas tree.

You can see the rest of this set and my other photography on my flickr stream.

Foto Phriday . . . um Saturday

Didn't have anything new to post yesterday, but was able to get out today and shoot some. No words today, only images.

Picturing Pairs

I was just looking through a couple of photos from the past couple of days and realized that they each contain 2 human subjects. whatever. Some of my favorite people pictured in the first and last photos. The center one is the first candid portrait that I am pleased with. Nothing better than two old farmers and a cigarette.

Photos on Phriday. . . word.

I went dowtown this past weekend and shot a few frames with Kirk Johnston, (ain't he sexy. note the jawline). The first shot is a sort of an existential exploration. I am intruiged with scenes like these, partially because of their naturally responsive tone they take in light of the work of guys like Thomas Kinkade, but more so because of their partially bleak portrayal of the realities of the world we live in. . . Christ's grace is sweet, indeed, as it brings meaning in the midst of these things.

The second shot is more of a fun shot, taken at a longer shutter with the aperture almost completely closed to get the starring effect in the lights. I was very pleased with the green that are tied together in this photo between the lights and the car. I put my tripod in the middle of the road and got busy.

Friday Photos. . .

I had a few good opportunities over the past couple of weeks. First, I was able to do some photos for a great engaged couple, Sean and Carolyn, who were easy to shoot and fun to work with. Second, my photography professor let me borrow a couple of lenses. The first shot posted here was made with a 70-200 mm f-2.8 lens. It allowed me to get great depth of field, as is seen in the photo of the fan chains. You can see more of my photography on my flickr stream.
